When we bought our beach condo, we inherited a small, dark, and outdated galley kitchen. The space was functional but didn’t have any personality, and I knew that a makeover was necessary. However, since we’re working with a tight budget, a complete overhaul with new appliances and cabinets wasn’t an option. So, I had to get creative with how to refresh the space while staying within my means.

The Plan for My Kitchen Makeover

Looking from the dining room into the kitchen, the cabinets were in great shape, which was a plus, but everything else was a challenge. The appliances were mismatched, and I knew I’d have to live with them for a while. The microwave and refrigerator are both relatively new, so they’ll stay for now. The dishwasher, however, is older and might eventually need replacement, but for now, I’m considering painting it black to match the rest of the space. It’s not my ideal choice, but it will work for now.

I created a mood board for the space, which gave me a clearer vision of how I could make the kitchen feel brighter and more modern, with a farmhouse touch. Here’s the plan I’ve laid out:

1. Freshen Up the Cabinets

The first step is to paint the cabinets. I’ve chosen Sherwin Williams Extra White to match the trim throughout the condo, giving the entire space a cohesive feel. The paneling above the cabinets, which looks dated, will also get a fresh coat of paint to brighten up the whole kitchen. While the cabinets aren’t shaker-style, the white finish will give them a more modern and updated look.

2. Install a Backsplash

The kitchen currently lacks a backsplash, and I think one would really add a touch of elegance and functionality. After searching for an affordable and easy-to-install option, I decided on peel-and-stick glass subway tiles from Aspect Tile. They don’t require grouting, making installation a breeze, and the sleek design will complement the modern farmhouse vibe I’m going for.

3. Upgrade the Countertops

The biggest splurge for this kitchen makeover will be the new countertops. I’m replacing the old, worn-out fake butcher block with Luna White granite, which is a choice I’m really excited about. The granite is similar to what I used in my home kitchen remodel, and I love how it looks. It’s bright, low-maintenance, and has a timeless style that ties in beautifully with the rest of the design.

4. Replace the Faucet

The faucet is another area I’ll be updating. I’ll be swapping out the old chrome faucet for something more modern and sleek that complements the new countertops and sink. It’s a small change but will make a big difference in the overall look of the space.

5. Change the Cabinet Hardware

The existing cabinet hardware is outdated, with cheap glass knobs that are loose and won’t tighten properly. I’ll be replacing them with brushed nickel hardware that has simple, clean lines. This update will make a huge difference in elevating the kitchen’s overall style.

6. Add a Hood Above the Microwave

Although this project is a couple of years down the road, I’d love to add a range hood above the microwave. The kitchen is narrow, so a full-functioning hood wouldn’t be practical, but I plan to install a hood purely for decorative purposes. It will give the space a more polished look and tie in with the modern farmhouse style.

Final Thoughts

Even though my small kitchen isn’t in the best shape right now, I have a solid plan in place to transform it into a bright, modern, and welcoming space. With a few simple updates, like painting the cabinets, installing a backsplash, and upgrading the countertops, I’m confident the space will be unrecognizable when I’m done.
